1. Many people are taught when they are young that it is wrong to lie. Do you believe there are times when it is permissible to lie? Why or why not? Give examples to support your position. (70 words)
2. Do you believe Jakob was justified in lying about having a radio? Was it permissible in this situation? Explain why or why not and discuss the consequences (whether good or bad) of his lie. You should also consider the possible consequences of not lying. (70 words)
3. Clouds play a central role in the movie- from the fairy tale of the sick princess, to the last lines of the movie. What do you believe the cloud metaphor symbolizes and why?

1. I think that there are times when it's okay to lie. For instance, parents lie to their kids all the time about Santa Clause, but I think that's okay because kids are more excited about Christmas that way. If it's for a good cause and it doesn't hurt anybody that badly, I think that lying is fine. However if a friend asks you if you like their outfit, or something small like that, I don't think that it's okay to lie in this situation because they won't ever trust you again.
2. I think that Jakob is justified for his first lie, but not after that lie. If he had told them that he had smashed the radio after that first lie to Mischa, then they would have stopped asking him to lie and he would have given a little bit of hope. His friend probably wouldn't have hung himself. He would have had a little hope, but not so set on it.
3. I think this means that Jakob has been setting people's hopes too high.

1. I believe there are times when it is ok to lie. For instance, if somebody's birthday is coming up and you get them a nice gift, they will ask you what you got them and you could tell them something lame, or just keep it a secret so they would be surprised when you give it to them. If you think its wrong to lie, and you should tell them exactly what you got them for a presant, that would take all the suspense out of getting a birthday gift. That is my reasoning as to why I believe its ok to lie sometimes.
2. I think its justified that Jakob lied about the radio, because he saved that one guys life. If he hadn't made up that lie the guy would have gone and stolen potatoes and gotten shot and killed. Also because he told the lie the suicide rates went down in the ghetto. Although, I do believe he let it get too far before he stopped. There's a time to lie, but theres also a time to come clean.
3. I think it means he mislead them to believe something that was impossible or somethin like that.

1. Well, there are times when you can lie to change something important that cant be changed otherwise. In the movie it saved someone's life. But it totally ruined his. I would avoid it almost totally. It would have to be a very rare and important time for me to lie. But it would have to out way the lie totally ruining my life. I think jakob went too far, he kept lying to over up for the first one.
2. I can see why Jakob told the first lie. He was saving someone's life, and that persons way of living may improve a lot. But the problem happened when word spread and he decided to keep lying to everyone. He did bring good of his lying, there were no suicides, but when they found out, it puts the people down even lower than where they were before. Lying is an instant enjoyment kinda thing, but after the enjoyment is gone, there is only pain and sorrow.
3. It symbolizes that, trying to catch there freedom is like trying to catch a cloud, impossible. He made it seem like they did so everyone else didnt think they were in the bad situation that they were.

1. Sometimes I think that it's okay to lie if it's matter of life or death or something as important. Other times, like when it's children and their fantasies, children don't need to grow up so soon and it's helpful to keep their imaginations growing and up and running. In this movie, his little lies was what kept the town alive and hopeful. This is why it's sometimes good to lie.
2. The first lie was to save a friend's life. He did tell the truth at first, but sometimes the truth is the hardest to hear. When the truth is so bizarre that no one could ever believe you. He should have slapped him or something to make him listen. But he didn't and his little lie spread around and he had to keep lying about his lie and that never helps. He eventually paid for his lies with the death of a friend and the loss of trust among his peers. Although he made life in the ghetto somewhat bearable for a little amount of time, that time ended and they probably all ended up dying. But what can you do?
3. Yeah, so I still have no idea what the cloud thing was about and thought that it was one of the least liked last line of a movie ever, but I'll give it a shot. Lina kept looking up at the castle looking building with the clouds surrounding it. I think that the clouds could have been hope for the ghetto and all of the Jews all around the world. It could have also been what their life could have been and also what it used to be. Everything was just made of cotton balls and fluff as big as your pillow. But I don't get the thing about Mischa bringing it though.
So there it is.
The End!!

1. I think that lieing is not a very good thing to do but there are exceptions. Like if you are doing a surprise thing for your friend and they want to know what you are doing you can't tell them so you have to lie. Or if someone has something and they want to know if you like it, and it is not your style you have to lie there. It is not ok to lie a lot because telling the truth is the best thing to do.
2. I can't really say what I think about jakob lieing it was both good and bad. Good that people stoped killing them selves also that people were a little happier, they had something to look forward to! Bad because, he really didn't know where they were he didn't know if the russians were still coming or if they had been defeated. He did lie and his friend killed him self. If he didn't lie his other friend would have died.
3. The cloud is like freedom the gardener is like the russians and the sick princess is the germans. the germans needed the russians to bring them their freedom.

1. I think that yes of course it is wrong to lie. But in some situtations it is not. I think that it is okay to lie if it is a "white lie" or a lie to make someone feel good, or just for a good cause. A good example of a "white lie" is when someone says that someone is ugly, and they are sad about it, thats when it is okay to go up to them and tell that they are not ugly just to make them feel good. People lie a ton every day.
2. I think that Jakob was justified in his first lie, because he pretty much saved his friends life. He could have got shot for steeling the potatoes. But I think that he should have stopped lying after that and just said that the radio broke so everyone just stopped asking for the news from the radio. I think that if he did not lie the first time then his friend would have got shot for trying to steel the potatoes.
3. I think it means that Jakob has been telling lies to make the people feel good. And also just getting the people hopes up.

1. I think there are a lot of times when it is ok to lie. Birthdays, christmas, and anniversaries are all times when you get someone a present. You don't want to spoil the surprise by telling them what you got them, so you lie. Small things are ok to lie about, but when it's something big you shouldn't. If your friend asks if something is a good idea and it's really idiotic, you shouldn't say it's a good idea.
2. I think, under the circumstances, Jakob was justified in lying about the radio. His friend was going to die and didn't believe the truth, and gave the people of the ghetto hope. He shouldn't have continued to lie about the Russians advance, simply that it broke and that he smashed it in case the Germans searched his house.
3. I believe the cloud symbolizes the freedom that Jakob lead them to believe they almost had. They thought the Russians would save them, but in truth they could have been anywhere.

1. I think that it is alright to lie in some situations. If it's something that you know would bring joy to someone, that it may be alright. But if it's something bigger, like in this movie, that would cause stress and grief, it wouldn't be a good thing to do. If you were to lie to someone about something small and very minor, when the truth finally comes out, the outcome might be worse than actually telling the truth would have been. Trust is also something that could be lost in the process of lying.
2. I don't think that it was OK that Jakob lied. He told everyone something that got thier hopes up and it was dangerous. Not only did he put himself in danger, but everyone in the ghetto, as well. One consequence of the lie, was in the end when he finally told the truth, the answer was not what that person wanted to hear and resulted in suicide. Someone might have died if he hadn't started the lie, too. Mische was going to run out and steal potatoes, so Jakob told the lie to stop him. So, no matter which way he would've gone, somone probably would've died.
3. I honestly have no idea what the cloud meant. It could've meant that he had set everyone's hopes too high, maybe symbolizing how impossible escape or freedom would be. But, it really didn't make any sense and that movie was pretty weird.

1. There are sometimes that lying is ok. If the lie is in your benefit, then no, its not ok to lie. Like if you are a parent and you dont want your kid to know something, then its ok. There are good times to lie and then there are not. Now, if you are like going to get beat up and lie about something, maybe, but just dont do it. Lying has its benfits, but mostly its bad to. Now, if a women ask you if she looks fat in this, then, well, your choice. :)
2. Now, Jakob had some reason to lye about his radio. Everyone was so depressed about being in the geto and nothing was getting better, so he was just trying to cheer the people up. If he didnt lie, the people would probably have given up. In the end, when he tells his friend that he does not have a radio, then he gives up on life and commits suicicde. bad things can happen. Jakob lies about the radio had benifits and bad consquences.
3. I think that the clouds represent cleaness. Like in the story that she heard on the "radio", she had to be given a cloud in order to not be sick. when they are in the cart going to the concentration camp, the cloud I think that it represents that after the camp that they will become clean again.

1. In specific situations, I think it's okay to lie. If you are protecting yourself or if the lie is going to help you in the long run, it's sometimes the only thing you can do. But in most situations, lying only causes problems. One lie can turn into a thousand. It's usually better just to tell the truth then to have to make up stories. If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.
2. I think that Jakob should have only told the lie at the beginning. He shoud've stopped after that. He took it to far and it only made things worse. Maybe if he hadn't have lied so much, his friend would still be alive. He got carried away and it ended badly.
3. The cloud, to me, means that lying can make people believe things that aren't true. Like the little girl thought that clouds were made out of cotton balls because Jakob told her that. And everyone believed Jakob about the radio and it wasn't true.

1. I think that there are certain situations where it is okay to lie. An example of good lying is for things like the Easter Bunny, Santa Clause, or the Tooth Fairy because you want you kids to have a fun time when they are little so it is okay to lie then. It is also okay to lie if the outcome of you not lying would hurt someone. Like if someone is looking for your friend and you don't want that person to find them because they would hurt them then it would be okay to lie in that situation.
2. I kind of think that there were some good point for his lie and some bad points. Some good points are that it gave them hope and helped some of them get through each day. Some bad points are that the lie kept on building until he was making things up instead of basing the first lie off of the real radio that he heard. He started making things up that he didn't even know. It was also risky because if the Germans would have found out that he had one which he really didn't it would be extremely dangerous for everyone in the camp, and he could have gotten himself and some others killed.
3. I think that it symbolizes how clouds are impossible to catch and that was also like their freedom. They were never going to be free so they could never catch their freedom just like you can never catch a cloud

1. Since I was little I have been taught not to lie. In some cases lying is necessary. If you are ever in danger and need to lie it is okay. Especially if a stranger calls when you are in the house alone and asks if your parents are home. I was taught never to tell the truth if I come in that situation. For instances like that, it is best to lie and say things like, "Yes, but they are busy right now," or something to that affect. But, in most instances lying will just make every thing worse and you will have to lie again to cover up that lie, etc. just like Jakob. Soon you will have so many lies to remember instead of having a clear conscious and knowing you chose not to lie. It is the hardest thing to do to tell the truth, but in the long run it is easier to tell the truth the first time.
2. Jakob was NOT justified to tell the lie about the radio in the first place. It was the other guys fault if he wanted to be shot. Jakob could have just left it as he had heard it on a radio when he was sent in a German building because he was "after curfew." If the guy didn't believe him then that was his own problem. All his lying did was get him into a lot of trouble with having to lie again and again and again. Sure it brought down the suicidal numbers, but it was still the wrong thing to do. Plus the suicidal rate probably increased more when he finally told the truth.
3. When the gardener brings the princess the cloud it makes her well again. For me at the end it symbolizes, like the story, that there is hope and that everything is going to get better. Ether that or they are going to work in a cotton field!:)

1. I think that sometimes it is okay to lie. We lie all the times to our friends. They are not big lies but sometimes we don't like a shirt they are wearing but they ask us if we like it. We are not just going to say that we hate it. That would make them feel really sad. They will never know that you don't like the outfit. It is also okay to lie to protect yourself. If a bully asks you if you have any money and you say no, even if you have some they will not bully you.
2. I think that Jakob he was justified to lie. It was okay because he gave all of the people in the ghetto hope. There were no more suicides in the camp because they had hope because the russians were in bezanica. A consequence of him lying is not a lot of people killed themselves but once his best friend knew he had lied, he killed himself. If he had not lied in the beginning if he had not told people he had a radio, then there would have been more suicides in the camp. If he hadn't lied his friend could have not killed himself.
3. I think that the cloud symbolizes freedom and how they are impossible to catch and they are very far away.

1. I think it is okay to lie if the situation requires it. Some examples are, Santa Clause. Parents lie to their children that he is real even though it is just a story to make kids excited for Christmas. Another is if you were in a dangerous situation, i think it would we okay to lie. I think it is only okay if it is a small lie though. People shouldn't tell lies that will hurt other people or will lead others to trouble because they believed a lie someone told them. Also if you lie all the time people won't trust you, just like "the little boy who cried wolf".
2. I think he was justified with his first lie because he saved Mischa's life. If he hadn't told him that he personally had a radio then he would have been killed. I don't think he should have kept lying after that. He should have just told everyone the truth. If he hadn't kept lying his friend, the barber wouldn't have killed himself because he wouldn't have had so much false hope. The positive consequence of his lie was that the suicide rates went way down.
2. I think the clouds symbolize false hope. The princess thought that cotton balls were a clouds and that they would make everything better. Also all the people believed what Jakob was saying so much that it was really hard to take when they found out it wasn't true.

1. I think you should only lie when you are benifitting someone else. because if someone was about to die or something and you lied to save them and benefit them then that would be good. other than that lying is pretty bad. becuase all it does is did a hole and every time you lie after that you just dig your hole deeper and deeper until things get really bad and you have to lie.
2. i personally think it was a good and bad idea for jakob to lie about the radio. becuase
in doing so he saved misha's life and many others from suicide but at the same time he had to keep lying in order to make people think the first lie was the truth. and he just kept digging a hole deeper and deeper. if jakob had not lied his friend misha would have died and others would have continuted just commiting suicide because of the harsh conditions.
3. it is a symbol of hope. for the little girl so ya. she can have hope to fly away on clouds with a handsome man. ya its a symbol of hope. i think that because thats what it does for the little girl is give her hope.
1. in some instances it is okay to lie. if you are lying for someone else and not yourself, than it is okay to lie. if you lie for your self then it is just selfish and there is no reason for it. sometimes you have to lie for the benefit of other people, like when you tell a woman she doesn't look fat in her outfit. If you would have told her the truth she would have been self concious all day.
2. I think that jacob is justified in his first lie, because he was lying to save that guy's life. If he hadn't told a lie, than he would have ran out, tried to steal some potatoes, and got shot. however, I think that jacob told the truth too late. since he decided to keep on telling lies, he should have not stopped. because he told the truth his friend hung himself and everyone was more depressed than they were before the radio.
3. I think the clouds represent the jews freedom. they always dream about it and think about it but when you try to catch it, it is impossible. it is out of your reach.

1. It is not okay to lie when you are trying to make your self look better and when it hurts other people but when you are lying to save peoples lives and to help others have hope then it is justified. Or when you lie to help cheer someone up it can sometimes be right. But mostly it is very very very wrong and you should not lie. In life the less we lie i think the better we will do!
2. I think that when Jakob lied it was justified. It even said in the movie that after he told the lie there were no newly reported suicides in the ghetto. The lie gave people hope that they really needed and after they heard the news they did have hope. How ever when he continued to lie it kind of got way out of hand and the 'news' was less believable and people started to question Jakob. So in a life or death situation like Jakob's it was alright for him to lie.
3. I think that the clouds represented people chasing there freedom and people reaching up to get 'better'.
K.A. A2
1. I think you can lie sometimes when you should lie, only when it is for yours and someone else's safety of life threatening things . But if it is lying just to get out of something that you should do or something that you did and is very important to know but you don't want to get in trouble, like when your parents asked, "who spilled the juice on the carpet" and you say, "it wasn't me," then that is a lie.
2.It was an okay thing that he did because it made the jews have hope but the thing is, is that he kept lying over and over to them, so it was more of a bad thing then a good from my point of view. But in the end there was a man that found out but then after he did he committed suicide, I think that happened because he did not believe anymore.
3.I think that it means peace and someday you wont have to worry about the war and nazis (death).
Every thing will go back to normal

1) I believe that lieing is okay for constuctive purposes. That meaning lie when it helps people. people will often lie about their homework because they were too lazy to do it themselves. People will often lie to get out of doing work. This degrades the situation. On the other hand, lieing to a criminal to escape capture is called constructive lieing and can actually be a good thing when used correctly.
2) Jakob lied in the beginning to stop his friend from committing suicide. He further lied to make his situation acceptable. He continued lieing to stop all the suicides in the area. Suddenly people have hope. False hope maybe, but there are no suicides, no more fear. People are happy. That is a noble cause if there is one.
3) In the clouds fairy tale, the girl was diagnosed with a strange sickness. She needed a cloud to get better. She believed a cloud was as big as her pillow, and made of cotton balls, so when the gardener brought her cotton balls, she was all better. Everyone knows a cloud is not made of cotton balls, and is far bigger than her pillow. But she believed that the gardener brought her a cloud, and so she was better. Jakob told everyone that things were going to be better, and the people of the ghetto did the actual work of making things better with the lack of suicides and bundles of hope. Everything was good because they believed it would be.
